The life I planned changed, too.

For three decades, much of my identity was rooted in corporate leadership, achievement, responsibility, and building what came next.

Then I was laid off. Soon afterward, a life-threatening illness entered our family, my husband became disabled, and caregiving reshaped the rhythm of our days. The future I had imagined—and worked hard to secure—was no longer possible in the way I had pictured it.

Like many Gen X and midlife women, I found myself carrying several roles at once: supporting my husband, showing up for children and grandchildren, helping aging family members, and trying to understand who I was when the title and plan that once defined me were gone.

That season did not give me easy answers. It did reveal something deeper: a changed plan does not mean a finished purpose.
